Post Partum Dads:
Men are also prone to
postpartum depression as well as new mothers. Having
a baby is a life-changing event for both the mother
and the father. The experience of the pregnancy of
their partners and the birth of their child is a
stressful time. According to some studies approx. 1
in 4 new fathers have postpartum depression.
Warning signs include:
-
Irritability
-
Aggressiveness
-
Hostility
-
Sadness
-
Despair
-
Difficulty interacting with
the new baby
-
Difficulty showing support
to the mother
|
Without appropriate
intervention, paternal depression can have long term
and adverse implications for the family.
Screening and early intervention can protect the
welfare of the entire family.
